In keeping with the mission of the American Mountaineering Museum, the Hall of Mountaineering Excllence celebrates the achievements of American mountaineers on and off the mountain. The American Mountaineering Museum hosts an annual gala to honor inductees, featuring the induction ceremony and presentation.

Inductees come from all disciplines; mountaineering, rock, ice and mixed. Inductees have made significant achievements in mountaineering history, such as first ascents.
The museum focuses not only on the sport of mountaineering, but also on the tangential aspects of climbing, namely environment, culture, art, teamwork, etc. Thus, any inductees are not simply great mountaineers, but have also made contributions of significance in other areas relating to the mountains.
Giving back to the climbing community directly through advocacy, financial support (grants, etc.), activism, etc.
Giving back to the climbing community indirectly through the creation of an admirable and inspiring legacy which touches and inspires current and future generations of climbers.
